It is important to remember the necessary inventions which
led up to the creation of the automobile. Pre 1800's Nicholas-
Joseph Cugnot built a steam powered gun tractor capable of 2
mph. Surprisingly, in addition to pulling an artillery piece,
the vehicle could carry several people. Twenty years later, the
first US patent on a steam-powered land vehicle (not an automobile) was granted to
Oliver Evans.
The Automobile goes back to the 1880's in Germany & France with the likes of
Herron Daimler and Benz. In the United States, the original history of the automobile
revolves around these famous names, Frank and Charles Duryea, the Packard Brothers,
Henry Ford, Ransom Olds, Henry Leland-Cadillac Motor Co., William Durant of Buick and
General Motors and many, many more pioneers.
